Was als lose Reisebekanntschaft beginnt, wandelt sich in eine tiefe Freundschaft, so dass sich Claire und Ani Monate später in Tibet wieder treffen, um eine gemeinsame Pilgerreise zum Heiligen Berg Kailash zu unternehmen. Deren spirituell einfühlsame Schilderung gehört zu den Höhepunkten des Buches. By looking at these playwrights' works within the broader context of women's roles in African performances and theater, this study addresses the following questions: What are the local, national, and global structures that have undermined African women's self-representative autonomy? How have they represented themselves through traditional performances, colonial and postcolonial theatrical genres, and scripted drama? How do their changing representations within such performative spaces reflect their changing representations within social and political spaces from the pre-colonial to the postcolonial era? Research on women in African theater and on African women playwrights published to date remains limited and largely peripheral to the important body of scholarship devoted to the works of male African playwrights. Moreover, studies on African drama and performance tend to separate popular theater from scripted drama. This book explores the works of both Anglophone and Francophone African women playwrights in relation to the history of African theater.

In this book, Mule creates a multi-faceted interpretive model for the critical study of African women's literature, especially drama. He shows how African women dramatists put their dramatic works in dialogue with other literary traditions within the continent, taking part in a tradition of African theatre that challenges reductive notions of Africa and exclusionist practices of nationalism. He is cognizant of the three traditions that make up the corpus that we ordinarily refer to as African literature: oral literature, literature written in African languages, and literature in languages which are not indigenous to Africa, especially English, French, Portuguese, and Arabic. Mule also demonstrates how the dilemmas initiated by colonial modernity dominate African colonial and postcolonial thematic corpus. In particular, he argues, critics have to become aware of the complex ways African literature, especially women's literature, constitutes dissident and subversive responses to cultural impositions in the form of traditionalism (which he define as the demands placed upon women to live by the edicts of traditional values even when such values have been emptied of their meaning), and colonial modernity. The book then may be seen as a critique of how women's writing, presented in different language, constitutes an important interpretive space for the postcolonial condition of Africans in general, and African women in particular. It also underscore the complex ways in which the formal properties of African women's creative imagination in both African and European registers constitute the genre's specifically African postcolonial, feminist matrix.

Ward documents the evolution of these organizations, including class and race conflicts within them, but she especially focuses on the misuses of diversity culture."Respectably Queer" reveals how neoliberal ideas about difference are becoming embedded in the daily life of a progressive movement and producing frequent conflicts over the meaning of 'diversity.' Ward argues that this instrumentalization of diversity has increased the demand for predictable and easily measurable forms of difference, a trend at odds with queer resistance.Ward traces the standoff between the respectable world of 'diversity awareness' and the often vulgar, sexualized, and historically unprofessional world of queer pride festivals. She spotlights dissenting voices in a queer organization where diversity has become synonymous with tedious and superficial workplace training. En los años noventa, ante los horrores cometidos en las guerras de Bosnia y Ruanda, y después de años de lucha del movimiento feminista internacional, se empezó a comprender la utilización sistemática de la violencia sexual como arma de guerra. Se estableció jurisprudencia internacional dirigida a proteger a las mujeres contra los hechos de violencia sexual en tiempos de guerra, reconociendo que son crímenes de lesa humanidad, crímenes de guerra, parte del genocidio y equivalente a tortura. Con el establecimiento de los Tribunales Especiales para la ex Yugoslavia y Ruanda, así como la Corte Penal Internacional, se crearon mecanismos para facilitar la investigación y persecución penal de los autores de esos crímenes. En Guatemala, durante el conflicto armado interno la violación sexual de mujeres, en su mayoría indígenas, constituyó una práctica generalizada, masiva y sistemática, como parte de la política contrainsurgente del Estado. Fue un instrumento de guerra cuyo objetivo era la degradación de las mujeres, y, a través de ellas, el sometimiento de las comunidades indígenas, que eran percibidas por las fuerzas del Estado como parte de las organizaciones guerrilleras. A la fecha ninguno de los autores de tales crímenes ha sido investigado y menos castigado. Este estudio, que se inscribe en la lucha contra la impunidad y contra la violencia hacia las mujeres, es parte de un proceso integral impulsado por el Consorcio Actoras de cambio: la lucha por la justicia para dignificar a las víctimas y romper el silencio en torno a estos crímenes en Guatemala. This ethnographic study explores the life and work of successful marabout women in Dakar. It is set against the background of their private family lives, of developments in Senegalese society, and of global changes. While including female experts in spirit possession and plant-based healing, it also gives a rare insight in the work of women who offer Islamic knowledge such as Arabic astrology, numerology, divination and prayer sessions. With the analysis of marabout women's work this study sheds light on the ways in which women's authority in esoteric knowledge is negotiated, legitimated, and publicly recognised in Dakar. The study focuses especially upon marabout women's strategies to gain their clients' trust. Reference to rural areas is a significant element in this process. This study thus contributes to an understanding of the gendered way in which trust and scepticism are related to marabouts' work and of the role of a connection between Dakar and the rural areas therein.

Rassismus

Die kritische Weißseinsforschung wendet den Blick von den Objekten hin zu den Subjekten von Rassismus. Weißsein wird darin als eine weiße, also unbeschriebene Fläche der Dominanzkultur beobachtet, die in ihren Besonderheiten nicht markiert wird, sondern als ein quasi unsichtbares Privileg besteht. Rassismus erschließt sich unter diesem Blickwinkel als Folge einer bestimmten Wahrnehmung eigener und fremder Identitäten, und "Rasse" als ein Konstrukt, das aus sozialen und kulturellen Unterschieden biologische Differenzen macht, um Machtverhältnisse zu rechtfertigen. Weiß ist, wer als weiß gilt. Schwarz ist, wer auffällig ist, weil nicht selbstverständlich akzeptierter Teil der Dominanzkultur. Das Buch beschäftigt sich in diesem Zusammenhang u.a. mit der Geschichte des Antijudaismus und des Antisemitismus, des Antiislamismus und Antiziganismus, aber auch des sexistischen Rassismus.

This book provides a detailed analysis of Anioma women war-time roles during the Nigerian civil war, also called the Biafran war. Anioma, the Igbo homeland west of the River Niger, was for long absent in the accounts on the civil war; yet, the Anioma like their Igbo kith and kin east of the River Niger (who led the Biafran revolution and fought the Nigerian federal government from 1967 to 1970) were as involved militarily and otherwise as Biafrans in the confrontation with the federal government all through that period of crisis. In analyzing Anioma women war-time roles, the book draws largely on interviews with women who survived the war. Mens re-collections of womens activities during the war and after were also reflected just as much as relevant information from archival materials from the federal, Anioma, and Biafran sides, both civilian and military. In addition to the focus on the war the book provides historical background on pre-war Anioma, delineating the activities of women, their roles, relationships and statuses vis a vis men. The book generally deals with issues that have not been given adequate attention in the academy from that period of Nigeria's troubled history but especially womens participation in the Nigerian or Biafran war, their care taking roles in and outside war zones, shifting identities and the maintenance of cultural and other norms in times of crises.

The Cameroon-born, Ivory Coastbased Liking centers her fifth novel on Halla Njokè, 75, who resolves to honor the women of her Bassa clan and to convey Africa's silences by unearthing her memories. The result is an exhaustive, meandering bildungsroman, interspersed with chantlike songs of life in a fictionalized, strife-torn 20th-century African country recognizable as Cameroon. Largely addressed directly to Halla's grandiose and philandering father, the first part of the novel recounts her harrowing rural childhood during which her father rapes Halla, attempts to marry her to much older men and fails to provide a promised education. Further, as the struggle for independence plays out in the background, her father collaborates with the white colonial leaders rather than supporting the local resistance. After Halla breaks with her family and moves to the city, she sings at nightclubs and begins to develop as an artist, which leads to a lot of interior monologue. The novel's last third, full of long summaries rather than dramatized events, thwarts its promising start.

The working poor contribute to, and benefit from, economic growth through labour markets and paid work, but employment generation has not featured significantly in the macroeconomic agenda. It was assumed that opening up economies to global competition and flexible labour markets would generate labour-intensive growth trajectories and secure livelihoods, leaving public measures for social protection restricted to those unable to earn their own living, but these predictions have not been borne out in practice. Poverty rates have declined, yet globalisation has brought new insecurity. Labour market flexibility has increased labour force participation but the informal nature of these jobs mean they are precarious and badly paid, trapping some in chronic poverty. Thinking on social protection, concerned about possible distortions of the labour market, has done little to stem the spread of informal employment. Despite policy commitment to poverty reduction through labour-intensive growth, the gains for the poor have been ambiguous. These themes were explored in a 2007 workshop convened by IDS and WIEGO. Bringing together researchers, practitioners and policymakers, their contributions now make up this IDS Bulletin. Articles cover the changing nature of the global economy, flexible labour market policies in different regions of the world, conceptualisation of labour markets, implications for macroeconomic policies, and the scope for social protection. The conclusion is the need for a better understanding of the way labour markets function in the real world if we are to find policies that will better deliver on the outcomes they promise.
