Unter den Bewohnerinnen von Frauenhäusern finden sich auch viele Migrantinnen auf der Flucht vor häuslicher Gewalt. Auf der Grundlage von 15 biografisch-narrativen Interviews zeigt die Autorin die besonders vielschichtige und komplexe Problematik im Spannungsfeld von Herkunft, Migration und Aufnahmeland, von subjektiven und gesellschaftlichen Perspektiven auf. Zentrale Ergebnisse in Zusammenhang mit Gewalterfahrungen sind die Relevanz gesellschaftlicher und familienbiographischer Kontexte, das Erleben unterschiedlicher Machtdimensionen und die Kontextgebundenheit von Geschlechterkonstruktionen. Weiters zeigt die Autorin, dass interdisziplinäre Perspektiven zwischen Migrantinnen- und Gewaltforschung und eine bessere Vernetzung zwischen Migrantinnen- und Anti-Gewalt-Initiativen einseitige Problemdefinitionen von häuslicher Gewalt, die sich negativ auf die Akzeptanz von Hilfsangeboten auswirken, verhindern können.

Zwangsehe, Ehrenmord, Genitalbeschneidung, Importbräute, Frauenhandel oder Kopftuchzwang sind zentrale Begriffe in emotionalen und kontroversiellen Debatten um Geschlechteregalität in multikulturellen Gesellschaften. Einige Feministinnen warnen vor den negativen Auswirkungen des Multikulturalismus auf Frauen und Mädchen, wenn Kultur zur Legitimierung von Gewalt oder Unterordnung von Frauen herangezogen wird. Andere hingegen betonen die Gefahr, dass die aktuelle Debatte zu "Gewalt" Gefahr läuft, Frauen zu Opfern und zu "Anderen" zu machen. Darüber hinaus werden durch die Debatten um Frauen als Opfer ihrer Kulturen bestimmte ethnische und religiöse Minderheiten mit "Traditionen" in Verbindung gebracht, die ihre "Kulturen" als inhärent frauenfeindlich erscheinen lassen. Die Unvereinbarkeit von Feminismus und Multikulturalismus wird häufig als Erklärung für die Abkehr von multikulturellen Ansätzen in Theorie und Politik herangezogen. Die vorbehaltlose Anerkennung kulturell legitimierter Praktiken erscheint angesichts von Gewalt und Unterdrückung problematisch. Doch genauso umstritten bleibt die Verwerfung von pluralen Ansätzen und die Forderung nach Assimilation, die Selbstbestimmung begrenzt und Lebensentwürfe einschränkt. In diesem Band werden Wege aufgezeigt, die das Verhältnis von Multikulturalismus und Feminismus neu bestimmen und Frauen- wie Menschenrechte in multikulturellen Gesellschaften thematisieren. The author locates prostitution in a political-economic context by treating it as work. Most valuably, she conveys her analysis through vivid portraits of the lives of the sex workers themselves and shows how the women involved are neither victims nor heroines.

Gina Ulysse explores how ICIs, determined to be self-employed, struggle with government regulation and other social tensions to negotiate their autonomy. Informing this story of self-fashioning with reflections on her own experience as a young Haitian anthropologist, Ulysse combines the study of political economy with the study of individual and collective identity to reveal the uneven consequences of disrupting traditional class, color, and gender codes in individual societies and around the world.

Transnational migration has become a distinctive aspect of globalization, manifesting the uneven and hierarchical relationships that inform it. This volume studies the new migratory flows among Asian women, focusing particularly on poverty and the attendant issues of powerlessness that mediate womens migration. While gender provides the conceptual tool for mapping differential experiences of social reality, by identifying poverty and migration as significant axes around which social relations and processes unfold, the volume unravels the complex layers of needs, networks and choices that come into play in poverty-driven migration. The papers in this volume focus on structural and ideological factors forming the contexts of migration, discuss the perspectives that give a determining role to economic structures, thereby reducing migration to a passive response, and conceptualize womens migration not merely in terms of degradation (or improvement) in womens social marginality, but as a process of restructuring of gender relations. While the papers from Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Philippines deal with international migration, those from Bangladesh and India discuss internal migration and the problems and compulsions therein. By bringing together experiences from various countries in the Asian region, both in terms of migration within the region and outward migration, the volume identifies patterns of similarity and differences within the macro-framework of the capitalist world economy and the changing patterns of labour relations.

The 1980s and 1990s represent a critical historical juncture for Hong Kong, as it underwent important social, political, and economic transformations. This period of transition, during which the state worked to redefine itself, significantly altered the role and status of Hong Kong women. Colonial modernity, which arose through the integration of the colonial state, the capitalist economy, and the Hong Kong Chinese society, proved favourable for some women but also had adverse consequences for others. It constructed women of different class interests and shaped the gendered citizenship of its colonial subjects. "Gender and Change in Hong Kong" analyzes womens changing identities and agencies amidst the complex interaction of three important forces, namely, globalization, postcolonialism, and Chinese patriarchy. The chapters examine the issues from a number of perspectives to consider legal changes, political participation, the situation of working-class and professional women, sexuality, religion, and international migration. This volume offers theoretical discussions as well as empirical findings.

The book explores how political economic shifts over the last century have reshaped the language practices and ideologies of women (and men) in the plains and mountains of rural Morocco. Through an entrenched moral code that favors male emigration, women have come to personify the rugged homeland and embody its native language - Tashelhit. They create frameworks in which knowledge of rural land, people, and expressive culture is positively valued. In contrast, national narratives that favor Arab identity marginalize Berbers yet immortalize Berber women as remnants of an idealized past. Through close analysis of verbal and song-texted forms, the book is a richly textured ethnography of anxiety and temerity among an overlooked Muslim group. Hoffman documents language choices and consequences in public and private contexts, providing insight into the everyday strategies Moroccan Berbers use to accommodate themselves to an Arab-speaking world, yet remain at least somewhat distinct.
