The book examines same-sex relationships in the cultures of East Asia? In this book the two authors analyze women's grassroots religious movements in Chile and in Brazil. The authors ask what happend to the generation of working-class women whose grassroots activism in Catholic base communities fired the Brazilian and Chilean pro-democracy movements as after the democratic transitions these women disappeared from the official view. The authors interviewed activists from Brazil and Chile. Drogus and Stewart-Gambino try to understand what sustains activism and movements in radically different circumstances from those in which they arose. Their analysis is enriched by systematic attention to the impact of gender and genderrelated issues on activism and movements. Altogether the book shows the different phases that social movements can go through.

In this anthology the Mexican Revolution is analysed from a gendered point of view. The writers place women on central stage. The essays show that women seized opportunities created by modernization efforts and revolutionary upheaval to challenge conventions of sexuality, work, family life, religious practices, and civil rights. The essays concentrate on the time between 1915 and 1950. The contributors render experiences ranging from those of a trans-gendered Zapatista soldier to upright damas catolicas and Mexico City's chicas modernas pilloried by the press and male students. Women refashioned their lives by seeking relief from bad marriages through divorce courts and new employment opportunities through vocational education. Activists ranging from Catholics to Communists mobilized for political and social rights. Although forced to compromise in the face of fierce opposition, these women made an indelible imprint on post-revolutionary society. These essays illuminate emerging practices of femininity and masculinity, stressing the formation of subjectivity through civil-society mobilizations, spectatorship and entertainment, and locales such as workplaces, schools, churches, and homes. The volume's epilogue examines how second-wave feminism catalyzed this revolutionary legacy, sparking widespread, more radically egalitarian rural women's organizing in the wake of late-twentieth-century democratization campaigns. The conclusion considers the Mexican experience alongside those of other post-revolutionary societies, offering a critical comparative perspective.

The book looks at the new sexual reality in Central, Eastern, and Southeast Europe after the fall of communism. It presents a kind of discussion of sexual identities, sexual politics, and gender arrangements that was often censored and rarely discussed openly before the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1987. Authors from a variety of disciplines examine how the changes caused by rapid economic and social transformation have affected human sexuality and if those changes can generate the social tolerance necessary to produce a well-rooted democracy. This theoretical and empirical body of work to sexuality in (post)transitional countries, Sexuality and Gender in Postcommunist Eastern Europe and Russia examines the effects of the profound social transformation taking place in the former Soviet Union. Through an interdisciplinary perspective, the book addresses vital issues of this transformation, including gender relations, gender roles and sex norms in transition, sexual representations in the media, patterns of adult sexual behavior, gay and lesbian issues, sex trafficking, health risks, and sex education. The book also presents a critical examination of whether the fall of communism has, in fact, induced changes in sexuality and gender relations. The contributors examine changes in sex and gender in countries in transition, including the negative consequences of Serbias "state-directed non-development" during the 1990s, the causes and consequences of trafficking in women from the Russian Federation, the debate over human rights for sexual minorities in Romania, the effects of two Yugoslavian films released in the 1990s that feature transgender characters, sexualities in transition in Croatia, problems created by changes in sexual behavior among urban Russian adolescents and the social and legal state of lesbians in Slovenia.

Die Autorin erzählt in literarischer Form von den unterschiedlichen Erfahrungen der ImmigrantInnen, mit denen sie über längere Zeiträume ausführliche Gespräche geführt hat. Mit FranzösInnen, die in Essaouira geboren wurden und deren Familien 1956, als Marokko unabhängig wurde, das Land verließen. Zu denen, die zurückgekehrt sind, gehören auch viele JüdInnen. Seit den 1970er Jahren strömten verstärkt KünstlerInnen und SinnsucherInnen in die Stadt. Dazu kamen EuropäerInnen, die erkannten, dass mit der Schönheit der Stadt und ihren billigen Arbeitskräften viel Geld zu verdienen ist. Und schließlich ist noch der Sextourismus dazu gekommen. Das Buch ist kein praktischer Ratgeber für EmmigrantInnen und AussteigerInnen, sondern eine Erkundung über Träume vom besseren Leben in der Ferne. Und Byer zeigt die Brüche zwischen den Kulturen, Identitäten und Lebensformen auf.

Frauen aus der so genannten ersten Generation erzählen Facetten der weiblichen koreanischen Migrationsgeschichte in Deutschland. Seit den 1960er Jahren waren koreanische Krankenschwestern und Bergleute gezielt für Deutschland angeworben worden, da in beiden Berufssparten Arbeitskräftemangel herrschte. Als die Wirtschaftskrise Mitte der 1970er einsetzte, sollten die KoreanerInnen Deutschland wieder verlassen. Viele koreanische Krankenschwestern wehrten sich erfolgreich dagegen. Die Frauen, die im Buch zu Wort kommen, haben sich in dieser Zeit des Widerstandes formiert und die Koreanische Frauengruppe in Deutschland gegründet: "Die Gruppe war eine Schule für mein politisches Bewusstsein, sie war ein Schwebebalken, auf dem ich ständig übte, mein Gleichgewicht in Deutschland zu halten." Die Texte spiegeln wider, was die Frauen bewegte, immer noch und immer wieder bewegt. Sie thematisieren Ausgrenzung und Rassismus, kulturelle Differenz, das Verlassen der Heimat und das Ankommen in einer fremden Welt, Freundschaft, Familie und Beruf. Sie handeln von den Selbstfindungsprozessen als Migrantin, dem Kampf um Rechte und der eigenen Politisierung in Deutschland.

Monika Mattes untersucht in diesem Buch, das zugleich ihre Dissertation ist, die Anwerbepolitik und die Situation von Arbeitsmigrantinnen, also so genannten Gastarbeiterinnen, in den 50er bis 70er Jahren in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Die Autorin verweist darauf, was in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung und zum Teil auch in der Migrationsforschung ignoriert wird, dass die Bundesrepublik Deutschland zu dieser Zeit die Zuwanderung von Frauen aus Süd- und Südosteuropa für den deutschen Arbeitsmarkt gezielt gefördert hat. Meist wird nämlich nur der männliche "Gastarbeiter" wahrgenommen. Mattes zeigt die Unzulänglichkeiten der staatlichen Regelungen zur Migration auf. Darüber hinaus stellt sie aber auch dar, wie die Migrantinnen mit Protesten und Streiks in deutschen Betrieben ihre Interessen wahrnahmen. Zwei Fallbeispiele illustrieren ihre Thesen. Mattes stellt zudem dar, dass Migrantinnen in der Bundesrepublik vor allem aufgrund ihrer Geschlechtszugehörigkeit benachteiligt waren.

Dieser Roman schildert das Leben von Zahra, einer 40-jährigen Frau, die von ihrem Mann verlassen wird. Anhand ihrer persönlichen Geschichte wird auch die Geschichte Marokkos, des Kampfes um die Unabhängigkeit und des Staates Marokkos nach der Erreichung der Unabhängigkeit, erzählt. Zahra, eine junge Frau ohne Schulbildung, heiratet in den 50er Jahre einen Französischlehrer, dem sie nach Casablanca folgt. Gemeinsam kämpfen sie für die Unabhängigkeit Marokkos. Nach der Unabhängigkeit Marokkos erhält ihr Mann einen guten Job in der Verwaltung. Er beginnt ein Verhältnis mit seiner Sekretärin und verlässt Zahra, die nun plötzlich nicht mehr seinen gesellschaftlichen Ansprüchen entspricht. Die von ihrem Ehemann verstoßene Zahra ist schließlich als Putzfrau im französischen Kulturinstitut in Casablanca tätig. Dieser Roman erschien 1982 in Arabisch und ist mit dieser Ausgabe erstmals auch in deutscher Sprache erhältlich.

Sie prangert Putins "starken Staat" an und schildert das Klima der Resignation, der Angst und der Rechtlosigkeit. Anna Politkovskaja wurde 1958 geboren. Sie war die bekannteste russische Journalistin, mit ihren Berichten und Reportagen über Tschetschenien erlangte sie Berühmtheit und wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen geehrt. Sie arbeitete für die Moskauer Zeitung "Novaja Gazeta" und verbrachte seit dem Anfang des zweiten Tschetschenien-Krieges im September 1999 viele Monate als Korrespondentin in der Kaukasus-Republik. Am 7. Oktober 2006 wurde Anna Politkovskaja in Moskau erschossen.

This book is a collection of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction by Iranian women living in exile. Two-thirds of the writings in this book have never been publsihed before. The book consists of writings from more than 50 Iranian women. The lives of these writers have been shaped and influenced by Iran's recent history, exile, immigration and the formation of new cultural identities in the United States and Europe. These female writers offer a complex literary view of Iranian culture and its influences. These writers interrogate, challenge, and re-define notions of home and language and their work offers readers an experience of Iranian diaspora culture. The book is divided into six sections: home stories, for tradition, woman's duty, axis of evil, beyond, tales left untold. The themes of this book are exile, family, culture resistance, and love. The poems, short stories, and essays are suggestive of an important conversation about Iran, Iranian culture, the Persian and English languages, and the dual identities of many of its authors.
